Professor Zbigniew ŚMIESZEK – current director of the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice belongs to the group of the most meritorious people in the non-ferrous metals industry and to metallurgists known in Poland and abroad. He is a graduate of the AGH University of Science and Technology. In the years 1975-91 he was the director of the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice, and then the director of strategy and development at KGHM Polska Miedź. In the years 1993-95 he was the vice president and then the president of the Copper Research and Development Center “Cuprum”. From 1996, he again heads the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice. He is a member of the Committee on Metallurgy of the Polish Academy of Sciences and a member of the Materials Science Committee, the Metallurgical Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Katowice, the Engineering Academy in Poland, AIME TMS (USA). He is also a member of the scientific councils of a number of PAS institutes and industry institutes. He is an active member of the Association of Non-Ferrous Metals Engineers and Technicians, in which he is the President of the Management Board. For three terms, he was the chairman of the Main Council of Research Institutes and currently, since 2007, he is the Vice-Chairman.
