Professor Wojciech Wojakowski, MD, PhD – a Polish interventional cardiologist, full professor, and since 2014, head of the 3rd Department of Cardiology – Department of Cardiology and Structural Heart Diseases at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. He serves as the Rector’s Plenipotentiary for International Cooperation at the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice.
He completed his medical studies at the Silesian Medical Academy in 1996. He earned his doctoral degree in 1998, defending a dissertation on “The influence of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors on connective tissue metabolism in the aorta during experimental hypercholesterolemia” under the supervision of Jan Gmiński. He is the author of over 500 scientific publications and numerous chapters in cardiology textbooks. He obtained his habilitation in 2009, based on an assessment of his scientific achievements and a dissertation. In 2013, he was awarded the academic title of Professor of Medical Sciences. At the Upper Silesian Medical Center in Katowice-Ochojec, he heads the 3rd Cardiology Department. In addition to his work at the Medical University of Silesia, he works as an interventional cardiologist and researcher in scientific programs conducted at American Heart of Poland S.A.
Prof. Wojakowski’s scientific output includes numerous original papers published in leading cardiology journals of global renown, such as “New England Journal of Medicine”, “Lancet”, “Circulation”, “Circulation Research”, “European Heart Journal”, and “Kardiologia Polska”. His clinical work focuses on interventional treatment of coronary artery disease and structural heart defects, while his research includes intravascular imaging, innovative implantable devices, and biological therapies for heart disease.
He is a member of the Polish Cardiac Society, where since September 2017, he has served as chairman of the Association of Cardiovascular Interventions. He has been awarded numerous honors, including scientific awards from the Minister of Health and the Polish Cardiac Society. He has also received the Thomas J. Linnemeier Spirit of Interventional Cardiology Young Investigators Award and the Andreas Gruntzig Award. In 2020, he became a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).
